Front Door Book

About
The Front Door documents nearly two decades of life on the Lower East Side — a record of the people who lived in a neighborhood that, at the time, most outsiders avoided. The book brings together photographs taken between 1985 and 2002 by Clayton Patterson, whose work has been dedicated to capturing the real LES.

Design
The design pulls from the visual language of newspapers — working with simple, functional layouts, visible gutters, and type treatments that quietly highlight key elements of the story.

Engagement
The book invites readers to move through the images almost the way you’d flip through an old stack of papers — loose, a little uneven, human. It’s not about nostalgia. It’s about holding onto a moment and a place before it disappeared.
